Attention: Businesses and Non-Profits with 1-49 Employees

In moving towards a more accessible Ontario, the Employment Standard of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, requires that employers make their employment practices accessible for employees and job applicants with disabilities.

Organizations with 1 – 49 employees had to complete four requirements by January 1, 2017.  The four requirements include the following employment practices: Hiring, Workplace Information, Talent and Performance Management, and Communication of Accessibility Policies.

The Four Requirements

  1. Hiring Practices

Organizations must notify employees and the public that the needs of people with disabilities will be accommodated during the recruitment process.

  1. Workplace Information

Organizations much provide workplace information in an accessible format to employees upon request.  This includes any information required to perform the job such as job descriptions and training materials, and general information that is provided at the workplace such as company newsletters and memos.

  1. Talent & Performance Management

Organizations that have performance review/management or career development processes need to provide accessible formats and accommodations to make the processes accessible to employees with disabilities.

  1. Communication of the Organization’s Accessibility Policies

All employees, including new employees, should be made aware of their organization’s policies to support people with disabilities.
